The highly anticipated iPhone 4 was released in the UK on Thursday, as thousands of eager consumers waited for the latest smartphone from Apple outside of the flagship Apple Store in London. Some had been queued for 24 hours in order to be among the first in the country to get the iPhone 4, which is lighter and thinner than previous models. The new release of the iPhone also uses its stainless steel body to improve reception of mobile signals by acting as an antenna, according to the Cupertino-based company.

Other improvements of the must-have device include 40 per cent more talk-time resulting from increased battery performance, as well as an improved camera. The current model allows for five megapixel quality, whereas prior versions were limited to 3.2 megapixels.[Read More]

Dubai: One of the top sporting officials from the UAE is convinced that the first batch of sports leaders will usher in a new era and fuel the country’s ambitions to stage bigger events in the future.

The senior official was speaking at the passing out function of the first batch of students of the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Programme for sports leadership development at the Dusit Thani Hotel yesterday.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman, Dubai Sports Council, presented the degrees to all 25 students who graduated in the presence of Mattar Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman, Dubai Sports Council.

“Yes, this is the start for the UAE whereby we can hope to take sports and its management to a new level through these young leaders,” Saeed Abdul Gafour, Secretary-General, UAE National Olympic Committee told Gulf News.

“The country has its ambitions and these young graduates are definitely part of this bigger plan. The UAE has on its agenda the possibility of staging the Olympic Games in the future and these young students will be among the core people involved for such an event,” Gafour added.

As many as 25 students, including four girls, comprised the inaugural batch of students who passed out under the programme that is tailor-made for the UAE keeping an eye on the future.

This is the first time that such a degree, equivalent to a Masters in Sports Management, has been offered in the region under the auspices of the World Academy of Sport Manchester Business School.

The 18-month course took the UAE students on a varied journey of workshops, lectures, clinics and mega sporting events including the Fifa World Clubs Cup and the F1 race in Abu Dhabi last year.

“We will ensure these new graduates get on-field training by posting them in clubs within the UAE and then sending them off on training assignments all over so that the country is better equipped to handle top sporting events in the future,” said Dr Ahmad Sa’ad Al Sharif, the Secretary-General of Dubai Sports Council.

Chris Solly, Director, IPC Academy that works closely with the World Academy of Sport, said that it has been a fruitful experience in delivering the dream of a nation. Classes were held in four different modules with each of these catering to specific aspects ranging from international sporting structures, high performance sports participation and how it can help develop sports stars within the UAE, commercial sports along with sponsorship and marketing and finally, the infrastructure within the country.

“There is good vision and there is good capability, and the more we build human resources here the more competitive the region will get,” Solly said.
Dubai Investments Park (DIP), the largest integrated business and residential community in the Middle East, has signed an agreement with Dubai Refreshment Company (P.S.C), the sole franchisee and distributor of PepsiCo products in Dubai and Northern Emirates, to host the beverage manufacturer’s new, AED 400 million soft drinks factory and warehouse facility at DIP.

Dubai Refreshment Company has acquired 140,000 square meters of prime industrial land at DIP to build the integrated facility.

The agreement was signed between Omar Al Mesmar, General Manager of Dubai Investments Park, and Mana Al Mulla, Managing Director of Dubai Refreshment Company.

Omar Al Mesmar said, “We are delighted to welcome Dubai Refreshment Company to the DIP community. DIP is today the most sought-after industrial location in the UAE and has become the preferred logistics hub for companies throughout the region. Despite the difficult market environment, DIP continues to witness strong demand for industrial plots as well as warehouse complexes.”

“The new factory and warehouse represent a significant long-term investment for Dubai Refreshment Company,” Mana Al Mulla said. “We required a sizable plot of land to build an integrated facility that would allow us to meet our future business needs, and Dubai Investments Park, with its world-class infrastructure and excellent utilities network, was an obvious choice of location. The move will allow us to consolidate our services in a convenient strategic location, and thereby gain a distinct competitive advantage.” [Read More]

The Dubai eGovernment Department has announced the launch of the electronic Modhesh Friends Forum in a new format reflecting the diversity of the 13th edition of Dubai Summer Surprises which features a wide range of presentations and recreational, cultural and heritage activities. The portal will enable young users to obtain information related to daily events and their exact details either through the inquiry and notification channel mDubai or the Unified Call Centre Ask Dubai at contact number 700040000.

Modhesh Friends Forum is supervised by Dubai eGovernment and is one of the main events dedicated to children during the annual Dubai Summer Surprises. It provides an ideal platform to facilitate discussions in Arabic and English with children between 7 and 17. Through the website (www.emodhesh.ae) children can communicate with each other, chat with the popular Modhesh mascot symbolising Dubai Summer Surprises, and participate in many activities to be held on the sidelines of the forum.

The forum for this years Dubai Summer Surprises will feature various sections, including Modhesh Friends, which will help users meet new friends; My Country, which will highlight the traditions and customs of the UAE, other Arab countries, and the rest of the world; and Electronic Modhesh, which will cover issues related to information technology applications and the use of computers and mobile phones. A Hobbies section includes 8 main divisions: Modheshs Kitchen, Modheshs Library, Modhesh & First Aid, Modheshs Craftwork Activities, Modhesh Sports, Amazing Ideas, Modhesh & Fashion, and Pictures and Comments. [Read More]
